How to Blog #1 "Potty" Train a Puppy

This would probably work just as well on cats, etc. But I say "puppy" because I use this method to train my *puppy*.

#1 Your pet does not automatically know to go outside to go "potty", no matter how much we wish they did- so do NOT expect them to.

#2 Because they don't know to go outside, they also won't know to warn you when they have to go so that you can get them there. Their first instinct when they have to go is to just find a spot and go.

#3 When they mess on the floor do NOT yell at them, hit them, or rub their nose in it. They're just following their instincts. Just clean up after them, and use something strong to cover up the scent so they won't automatically mess in the same place.

#4 As the owner who knows what the pet should be doing(while the pet still doesn't) if it messes on the floor it is YOUR fault for giving them the opportunity to do it. Which is why you don't do the things listed in #3.

#5 For the actual training. To teach your pet that they need to be doing their business outside, take them outside approximately every 30 minutes(this is how they won't have the opportunity to do it inside), whether they look like they have to go or not. When they do go, reward them with praise or a treat.


In 2 days I've gotten further with my puppy's training by using this method than I have in over 6 weeks with the "smack their rear, yell at them, then rub their nose in it" method.
I HATED being forced to train the puppy like that, and obviously it did nothing. There is no reason to train a pet like that. Pets are eager to please their master, that's motive enough.

Some breeds/individual pets are more difficult train, and may require a different method.

I'm not an expert, just passing along something I know works.


Just as an example of how it worked:
I used to wake up to find that my puppy had crapped on my bedroom floor in at least 3 places. The FIRST day after I woke up to a SPOTLESS floor.
Today I did wake up to one mess, but that's just because he got sick, and I hadn't covered up the scent well enough.
And on the first day, he warned me that he needed to go. The FIRST day.

I'm not saying your pet will show results so quickly. But this is a good simple method.

And this does not apply to males marking their territory.
